Coach Jason Whitworth (April 13, 1971-June 6, 2016) was a Physical Education Teacher and Track and Cross-Country Coach at West Shore Jr./Sr. High School. After inspiring students through his teaching for 7 years, Coach Whitworth had to leave the profession due to the debilitating effects of Lou Gehrig’s disease. As a former student stated:

“Coach Whitworth was like a father to the Cross Country team and we are really happy we are getting the chance to support him and fight against ALS.”

Coach Whitworth used the catch phrase “Never Give Up” which became the motto for many of his prior students and athletes. One of the most important messages that Whitworth wanted to impart to students in his final years, was “Don’t take life so seriously. Enjoy life and enjoy people.” After being diagnosed with ALS in 2011, Whitworth finished out his last school year in a wheelchair. During that year, his commitment and strength in coping with the disease inspired his students to raise both awareness and funds by organizing a community run, participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge, and designing a science experiment to be performed on the International Space Station in the hopes of one day finding a cure for ALS.

The Coach Jason Whitworth Scholarship is in honor of him as a person, his commitment, and the impact that he had on West Shore Students and those who knew him. The Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior at West Shore Jr./Sr. High School for their use in furthering their education.
